All single-use plastic shopping bags will be banned in Aotearoa from 1 July 2019. This includes the light-weight bags supermarkets, takeaways and other shops commonly use, as well as the heavier bags offered by some supermarkets as an alternative to a free single-use bag. Bags made of degradable plastic are also covered by the ban, including those sourced from plants. So, what are your options? Reusable bags made of canvas, cloth or recycled fabrics are strong, durable alternatives to plastic bags. They make great presents and often hold more too! It's just a matter of getting into the habit of bringing them with you whenever you go shopping. Putting them straight back in your backpack, bag or boot of your car after emptying your groceries will help ensure you’re not caught short!
